Bob Wood Biography

Bob Wood was born in Virginia, one of ten children, all of whom were musically inclined. His father was a five string banjo picker and Bob grew up playing hoedowns and mountain music. He left school at age 16 and went on the road with a band. In his lifetime he has performed in most of the U.S. and parts of Canada. He has shared the stage with so many of the Country music legends, such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Jimmy Dickens, Carl Perkins, Roy Clark just to name a few. Bob has worked as a session musician in Waynesboro, Va., Wheeling W. Va., Memphis, and Nashville, Tn. Bob has worked as a sales representative, consultant, & clinician (demonstrator) for such companies as Sunn Amps, Amps, Micro-Frets Guitars, Ovation Guitars (where he helped design two model guitars) Altec Sound Co., Randall Amps While demonstrating Micro-Frets guitars at the D.J. Convention in Nashville he landed a contract with a record company in Memphis, Tn. He recorded two of his own compositions, "Gonna Look Down" and "Hold Back The Night" and received pick hit of the week in all three trade magazines. He was booked on the Wheeling W. Va. Jamboree USA in January 1970 to promote his songs, in February he was invited back and signed as a regular member where he continued to perform for the next ten years. In 1975 and 1976 Bob was awarded "Entertainer of the Year" by The Eastern States Country Music Inc. (ESCMI) headquartered in Monticello, N.Y. In 1976 he went to The White House in Washington, D. C. on behalf of Ovation Guitars and ESCMI. and presented an Ovation Bicentennial Model Guitar to the Bicentennial Commission , which was accepted by Mr. Milton Mitler the head of the Commission. Bob had recorded three albums up until this time on the MRC label and during this trip they were placed in the National Archives , along with the Ovation Guitar. The albums were one instrumental and two vocals: "Bob Wood Plays IT Cool", "The Other Side Of Bob Wood", and "Reflections Of My Mind". Bob plays and enjoys most types of music from country to jazz, swing, gospel, old pop standards, etc. He is just as at home playing jazz as he is with country. However he never forgets where his roots are. He plays every Sunday where he attends church with the church orchestra, "Giving back some of what God so graciously gave me" he says. Bob and his youngest daughter Mitzi have just released a new CD titled "Generations". It contains old pop standards, swing, blues, ballads and originals. Bob says, "I have been fortunate enough to have seen a lot of my dreams fulfilled, but the fulfillment of this one has been my biggest thrill ever, getting to record a CD with my favorite female singer in the world, my baby daughter". Bob is still active in the music business and he says, "God willing, I'll be picking and grin’n when they pat me in the face with a spade".
